Castro del Rio is an Area of Craft Interest in Andalusia since December 13, 2012, published in the order BOJA on December 4, 2012.
Ars Olea is a unique exhibition of products made by craftsmen who hosts within the historic district of “La Villa” for three days.
The exhibition’s main protagonist is olive furniture. Its main objective is to promote through the crafts, culture and gastronomy the Cordovan municipality of Castro del Rio.
Castro del Rio is Villa Cervantina. Luis Astrana Marin in “exemplary and heroic life of Cervantes” recounts the passage of Miguel de Cervantes through this town:
While the distribution is proclaimed and time came to store wheat, Valdivia ordered MIGUEL (which from Cordoba sniffing places where he could be extracted precious cereal) going to make good out of him to Castro del Rio.
The villa, in which he suffered unjust imprisonment, bitter fruit of his black committees was good wall encircled with forty towers, under the protection of a Moorish castle, which had two doors, one to the south and another the north. It communicated with the town through an arc. The castle had been repaired by the Earl of Castro and other gentlemen, to 1466, when the turmoil of Henry the Impotent.
The population was divided into two parts: the one called Villa, old premises on a small hill of difficult access, about 300 steps from East to West, and just over 100 from north to south; and called Arrabales, lying at the foot of the same hill, from east to west through the northern part.
Castro del Rio is a village located southeast of the province of Cordoba, in the countryside. It is 42 kilometers from the capital and has an altitude of 236 meters above sea level. The surface of the municipality is 218.8 square kilometers and a population of over 8,000.
Located on the road between the cities of Cordoba and Granada, Castro pass major tourist routes, such as the Caliphate and the Baroque.
City of Craftsmen of olive furniture, has an important artistic heritage, which emphasizes its medieval quarter of the town, one of the largest and best preserved in Andalucía, where is celebrated in autumn, the Craft Fair Ars Olea, one of the largest in the area and attracts a lot of visitors every year.
